The Detling Players Production of The Benefactors
Massive planning developments affect all our lives, whether KIG warehouses in Thurnham or skyscrapers in South London. Such changes leave a lasting legacy and will blight the lives of our grandchildren.

The KIG development would irreversibly destroy beautiful open countryside and productive farmland. Proposed skyscrapers in South London would destroy settled communities in handsome Victorian terrace houses. Many of the issues are the same.

BENEFACTORS explores the South London situation during the 1970s. The fight to save the local community changes the lives of two couples for ever. Their struggles mirror our own fight in Kent.

The play will be presented in DETLING VILLAGE HALL, a bare mile from the KIG development. Audiences will see the moral and economic arguments laid before them in a parable for our times.

The Detling School Playing Field
Detling Parish Council recently acquired the school playing field (behind the village hall) for use as an 'open space' for the village. The council have already commissioned the installation of new fencing around the field, a path into the field and a mobility kissing gate for entry to the field and regular mowing of the grass.
We have a reserve of funds earmarked for developing the open space and are looking for ideas from people of the village on how best to do this. Possibilities include:
  • childrens play area
  • portable football goals
  • basketball hoop
  • park benches
  • planting of wild flowers
  • use by organised youth teams/clubs
If would like to officially open the space to the public in the spring
If you have any ideas, please share them with the parish council.

Kent International Gateway Public Consultation
The planning application for the Kent International Gateway has entered a further public consultation period following the submission of additional details to Maidstone Borough Council.

The proposed site for the Kent International Gateway Rail Interchange is 112.3 hectares in area. Thurnham Lane is at the west and Junction 8 of the M20 is at the east. The site is bounded on the north by the M20 motorway and in the south by the railway line in Bearsted. If the application is approved then the impact on our local community and road network will change this area beyond recognition.

The consultation period runs from 9th January 2009 until 6th February 2009.

The additional details regarding this planning application are available for you to see at digitalmaidstone.co.uk. They are also available at the Town Hall, the council's reception in the Maidstone Gateway, King Street, Maidstone, and at libraries.

The Joint Parish Group is strongly opposed to the proposals for a Rail Freight Interchange in the area. We urge all residents to submit their individual objections to the Borough Council. It is essential that MBC receive as many representations as possible opposing the application. The volume of objections will strengthen the fight against the application.

If you have previously objected to this application it is important that you make further representations. Your letter can simply refer to your previous objection and confirm that this still applies.

If you have not previously objected, then please ensure that you do not miss this opportunity. We must unite in fighting this proposal and it is essential that MBC receive an overwhelming number of objections to the planning application. Please make individual representations, any adult living in the property has the right to make a personal representation. Your representation need not be lengthy, it can be a simple statement such as, the environmental impact of this proposal is so damaging that I wish to record my objection to this planning application.

Representations should be sent in writing to Steve Clarke, Maidstone House, King Street, Maidstone, Kent, ME15 6JQ or by email to KIGcomments@maidstone.gov.uk. Quoting reference MA/07/2092.

ACT NOW – DON’T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOUR SAY

DEADLINE TO RESPOND IS 6TH FEBRUARY 2009.

The Detling Players Production of The Railway Children
The Detling Players are producing The Railway Children on Friday 14th November at 7.30pm and Saturday 15th November at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. The story is E. Nesbit, adapted as a play by Dave Simpson. The performance will take place in Detling Village Hall. Tickets are £6 each and £4 for children under 16. To book tickets phone 07842 169 725. There will be refreshments available in the interval.

The play is set in Edwardian England and concerns a period in the life of a mother and her three children. Following the wrongful arrest and imprisonment of the husband and father they move to the country and a life of relative poverty, leaving behind a very comfortable middle class life in a house full of servants in London. At the nearby railway station, the children discover Perks the Porter and his large brood of children, they have adventures!

This is a rattling good story, with a high moral tone. The mother is a Good Samaritan and the children learn by example. The Detling Players have a wonderful cast, with nine children taking part, a first rate technical team and the audience will see a memorable and enjoyable performance.

Detling School - Proposed Closure

School rolls in England and Wales have been falling steadily since the early 1990s, and although there has been a slight upturn recently, it is unlikely that they will return to previous levels for many years. It is in this context that we are considering whether to close Detling CE Primary School. For further information please review the proposal document (pdf)

The Parish Council has set up a commitee to discuss future uses of the Detling School site if the school closes in July 2007. We think it very important that the site should continue to serve the villahe community.

Detling Pre-School will continue to operate from this site. The group is thriving and hopes to expand next year.

The school grounds will provide a village green and playing field. Other possible uses being discussed for the buildings are a childrens centre; an occasional doctors surgery; a parish office; an adult education centre and perhaps car parking area for the village.

If you have any views, comments or ideas to contribute, please contact Gavin McLaggan on 738109.

Community Award

Community Award Presented at the Christmas Fair The Parish Council recently introduced a community, award for a person from Detling who has made a significant contribution towards the life of the village.
The Citation to Pat Follett reads as follows -
Pat's influence in the village is incalculable. She always seems to be aware of people in need of emotional or other help. She has been in charge of the Church's pastoral group since its inception. She is a most selfless person, quietly dedicating herself to the good of others and to keeping good neighbourliness to the forefront of Detling life.
When the Over SOs Club had to close, she took up the reins and started what has become "Detling Companions ": a way for villagers to get together for tea and socialising, which is most appreciated.
She and Brian are mainstays of the Church and all its activities. They host the prayer group at their home. A typical gesture of hers was in cooking gingerbread "St Martins " for the patronal festival within daYs of returning home from major surgery.
She is a very special person within Detling and well beyond. " Detling Parish Council
